ACORN Biolabs

ACORN Biolabs

We’ve teamed up with ACORN Biolabs at Toronto General Hospital.  The world’s first non-invasive follicle-based cell preservation service. We help patients cryopreserve their healthiest cells (-190ºC) to leverage  in future cell based therapies.

What is ACORN?

Acorn is non-invasive stem cell banking for use in personalized regenerative medicine. With Acorn, your cells are collected via plucked hair follicles and are safely cryogenically frozen. This stops the cells from aging, giving you a collection of your own younger cells to use in upcoming treatments. They also be cultured to multiply & to differentiate to tissue type

Who is ACORN for?

  • Autologous cryopreservation is for all these possibilities
  • Dermal Fillers
  • Biostimulators
  • Neuromodulators
  • Thread lift
  • Skincare
  • RF Microneedling
  • Laser resurfacing
  • PRP
  • Hair Restoration
  • Other aesthetic procedures
  • Juvenile Diabetes Type I
  • Family history of Parkinson’s disease or chronic illness
  • Foreseeable Sports injury spinal cord injuries
  • Preparing for major health changes
  • Concerns of age-related illness

How Does ACORN Work?

Your cells are collected through plucked hair follicles – a non-intrusive and efficient method that ensures a comfortable experience. These cells are then cryogenically frozen to -190C, halting the aging process. This means that when you’re ready for regenerative treatments, you have a lifelong resource of your own younger cells. Younger cells preserved at any age can help produce younger results, so banking your cells as soon as possible is a priority

Your own stem cells hold the potential to:

Regenerate -Recapturing that youthful glow and health

Rejuvenate – Improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles or regenerating cartilage in your joints

Repair – Reducing downtime from procedures like thoracotomy for heart or lung surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

The effects of aging accumulate over time and can have an impact on how much benefit our cells provide in regenerative medicine.

There is no specific cut-off date for when you can bank your cells. While no two people are the same, the average person reaches a peak cellular health in their 20s and then begins an arithmetic decline until sometime in the mid-60s, at which point the pace of aging begins to accelerate considerably, and you start to see an increase in age-related conditions.

Because everyone ages differently, and the breadth of regenerative medicine applications will have different needs from the patient’s cells, we wouldn’t be able to guarantee exactly how beneficial any individual’s cells would be, but if the cells are cryopreserved they would avoid the accumulation of additional damage and age that will come later in life.

You’re never as young as you will be today, so for most people, we recommend to bank as early as possible so that you can leverage younger cells for regenerative treatments as they become available in the future.

Cell banking is the process of collecting, freezing and storing cells for future use. Acorn at Toronto General Hospital banks your own cells, collected non-invasively via hair follicles.

More specifically, cryopreservation is the method of preserving biological material like cells, tissues, or organs for future use by freezing it at very low temperatures (-190° C). The process involves a controlled-rate freezer to protect the cells from damage and crystallization. Freezing cells at these low temperatures stops the aging process, preserves the integrity of cells, and protects them from external environmental factors.

Cryopreservation can safely and reliably preserve cells indefinitely, which means you’ll be able to benefit from future medical innovation for years to come.

The average person has roughly 100,000 hair follicles on their head, and Acorn only requires 50 for a successful collection. This abundant cell source is also harvested non-invasively and contains cells, like keratinocytes, fibroblasts and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that have the potential to help rejuvenate skin, regrow hair, repair tissues and even be leveraged in stem cell applications.

A good candidate considers the following:
Concerns with aging skin
Concerns with hair loss
Concerns of age related health conditions
Dealing with injury, wear and tear or the overall effects of aging
Preparing for treatments or big health changes
Interest in anti-aging and longevity
Preserve youthfulness
Planning for the future

The non-invasive collection involves plucking 50 hair follicles from the sides and back of the head. It takes roughly 15-20 minutes and has only minimal discomfort, similar to plucking eyebrow hairs. There is no recovery time or visible side effects. The follicles are transported to Acorn’s lab for analysis and confirmation of viability before being cryogenically frozen. The cells are safely stored and ready to access for applicable treatments. You own your own cells. They cannot be used for anyone else.

The most powerful anti-aging ingredient is your own younger cells
Our cells have the potential to rejuvenate skin, replenish hair, recover from injury, and even help fight disease. Cell-based regenerative treatments are poised to be the future of medicine. We will soon be able to use our own cells to rejuvenate our skin and body through stem cell extracts, growth factors, exosomes and more.

The clock is ticking. As we age, so do our cells and they become more damaged and less capable. This means that when we need our cells the most, they may be too old and ineffective to receive the full benefits of regenerative treatments. Younger cells can produce younger results, so it’s crucial to bank your cells as soon as possible. It is also never too late so if you are healthy 75YO you are younger than yourself at 90YO when you most need the regenerative medicine.

While there are no commercial applications for banked cells at this time, Acorn’s first stem cell derived serum is planned for trials with initial patients as early as 2023. In addition, there are over 8300+ cell and gene based trials with more new trials happening every year. Acorn is actively involved in developing products from banked cells, with partnerships across major universities and healthcare institutes across the United States and Canada. This is evolving science & research & the applications are ever expanding. Can you foresee the impact on infertility, alternative to joint replacement, bone marrow transplant from your autologous preserved cells.
The possibilities have endless medical applications and success stories around the world. Researchers in Japan have even successfully recreated a heart.
